Under state law (N.J.S.A. 26:2K-7 et seq.), only a hospital with an emergency department and which is authorized by the Commissioner may develop and maintain an MICU program, using physicians and specially trained advanced life support personnel (paramedics and mobile intensive care nurses). These services must be provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. According to published information, New Jersey appears to be one of the few states where MICU/ALS services are available to every resident.
The MICU Advisory Council is comprised of three representatives from each of the 31 designated mobile intensive care/advanced life support (ALS) programs. Those representatives are: the MICU Program Director, the MICU Educator, and the MICU Medical Director. (Click here for a list of the MICU programs and contact information.) The advisory council meets quarterly and the Program Directors, Educators, and Medical Directors hold interest group meetings as well.
The purpose of the Council is to advise the Department of Health & Senior Services on all matters relating to mobile intensive care/advanced life support services. The Council discusses issues such as ALS training requirements, ALS vehicles' patient care equipment, ALS medications, biomedical and communications equipment and procedures, treatment protocols, and scope of practice. (The MICU/ALS regulations can be found at N.J.A.C. 8:41.)
