Choosing the Home That's Right for You
Making the decision to move is a very personal choice. Some individuals
actively pursue their options ahead of time while others are reluctant
to even consider relocating. Despite the many different reasons
why people move, whether it is health related or for social reasons,
trying to find a home that is right for you, or a loved one, is
difficult and can be an emotional process.
For individuals who need long term care services, a skilled-nursing
facility is usually not their first choice. For some, a nursing
facility may be the setting that they believe can best meet their
needs and preferences, but for many, nursing facilities are used
as temporary, not permanent, arrangements.
The most important step in considering long term care is to assess
your needs and evaluate your options. Determining which setting
will work for you, or a loved one, often depends on what is available
and affordable to you. Financing
the costs of long term care and finding affordable
home and community-based alternatives are many families' main
concern. In some cases there are financial
assistance programs available for eligible individuals.
