Summit Avenue Bridge over Route 139 to close
in Jersey City
Traffic to be detoured using new Central Avenue Bridge
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the Summit Avenue Bridge over Route 139 in Jersey City is scheduled to close Friday night as the Pulaski Skyway Contract 2 advances.
Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, May 19, until this coming winter, NJDOT’s contractor, Schiavone Construction, will close Summit Avenue between Newark Avenue and Route 139 westbound upper roadway for the demolition and complete replacement of the Summit Avenue Bridge over Route 139. The project also includes the installation of new traffic signals at both intersections of Route 139 upper roadway and Summit Avenue. Access for local residents and businesses will be maintained on Summit Avenue between Newark Avenue and Route 139.
A signed detour for through traffic will direct motorists and pedestrians to the newly reconstructed Central Avenue Bridge, which reopened earlier this month after being fully reconstructed. NJ Transit bus stops have been relocated back to Central Avenue. Local police will be on site to assist with the detour.
The Summit Avenue Bridge is the fifth and final bridge that crosses Route 139 that is being replaced as part of the Pulaski Skyway Contract 2. The Palisade Avenue, Baldwin Avenue, Oakland Avenue, and Central Avenue bridges have already been reconstructed.
The first phase of demolition of the Summit Avenue Bridge concrete deck is scheduled to beginlate Friday, May 19 and continue through7 p.m. Saturday, May 20. A full closure of the lower roadway will be implemented to accelerate the demolition. Please be aware that during the early phase of the project, heavy demolition work will be ongoing during the overnight hours. This activity is being accelerated to minimize the impact to the local community.
The following detour will be in place:
- Motorists on Summit Avenue northbound will be directed to Hoboken Avenue eastbound to Central Avenue northbound
- Motorists on Summit Avenue southbound will be directed to Hopkins Avenue eastbound to Central Avenue southbound
This work is part of the $104 million Pulaski Contract 2, which will repair and improve the upper and lower levels of Route 139. Route 139 links the eastern end of the Pulaski Skyway to the Jersey City waterfront. During this contract, the deck on Route 139 upper level eastbound will be replaced, along with five cross street bridges from Palisade Avenue to Kennedy Boulevard.
Contract 2 is part of the $1 billion Pulaski Skyway rehabilitation project, which is being advanced through 10 separate construction contracts into the year 2020. The massive improvement project will extend the life of the Skyway by 75 years.
NJDOT created a project-specific website - www.pulaskiskyway.com - which contains a wealth of information about the Skyway and the project, and will be updated with relevant new information as work progresses.
